Quote of the Day

A sick, deaf woman enters the office.

Employee: "Ma'am, you don't sound so good."

Navy Unveils 3 New Aircraft Carriers

USS RONALD REAGAN:

This is the USS Ronald Reagan, seen next to the Arizona Memorial.

Capability

Top speed exceeds 30 knots, powered by two nuclear reactors that can operate for more than 20 years without refueling.

1. Expected to operate in the fleet for about 50 years
2. Carries over 80 combat aircraft
3. Three arresting cables can stop a 28-ton aircraft going 150 miles per hour in less than 400 feet

Size

1. Towers 20 stories above the waterline
2. 1092 feet long; nearly as long as the Empire State Building is tall
3. Flight deck covers 4.5 acres
4. 4 bronze propellers, each 21 feet across, weighing 66,200 pounds
5. 2 rudders, each 29 by 22 feet and weighing 50 tons
6. 4 high speed aircraft elevators, each over 4,000 square feet

Capacity

1. Home to about 6,000 Navy personnel
2. Carries enough food and supplies to operate for 90 days
3. 18,150 meals served daily
4. Distillation plants provide 400,000 gallons of fresh water from sea water daily, enough for 2,000 homes
5. Nearly 30,000 light fixtures and 1,325 miles of cable and wiring 1,400 telephones
6. Costs the Navy approximately $250,000 per day for pier side operation
7. Costs the Navy approximately $25 million per day for underway operations (sailors' salaries included).

USS WILLIAM JEFFERSON CLINTON

The USS William Jefferson Clinton (CVS1) set sail today from its home port of Vancouver, BC.

The ship is the first of its kind in the Navy and is a standing legacy to President Bill Clinton for his foresight in military budget cuts and his conduct while holding the (formerly dignified) office of President.

1. The ship is constructed nearly entirely from recycled aluminum and is completely solar powered with a top speed of 5 knots.
2. It boasts an arsenal comprised of one (unarmed) F14 Tomcat or one (unarmed) F18 Hornet aircraft which, although they cannot be launched on the 100 foot flight deck, form a very menacing presence.
3. An onboard Type One DNC Universal Translator can send out messages of apology in any language to anyone who may find America offensive.
4. In times of conflict, the USS Clinton has orders to seek refuge in Canada

USS BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA

1. Cost $930 billion dollars to produce, so far. Still requires more funding.
2. Responds to hostile terrorist threats by docking next to enemy ships and requesting to shake hands with the captain
3. This crew, like the crew aboard the USS Jimmy Carter, is specially trained to avoid conflicts and appease any and all enemies of the United States at all costs.

Knowing Is Half the Battle!

Two quick, important, G.I. Joe related updates:

- My art has been featured on Fandomania. Many thanks to them for choosing my work for last Friday's showcase!

- Do not watch G.I. Joe. It sucks beyond all capacity for rational thought.

I'll see you guys next week! Off to New Orleans, then Florida!

Why So Socialist?

The media is having a fit over sightings of poster propaganda depicting Obama as the Joker.

As Michelle Malkin points out, this depiction is nowhere near as hysterical or extreme as those blatantly wishing for former President Bush's death during his administration:

The question, then, is why people are wigging out over these posters when we lived through an era when anti-administration propaganda was the norm, not the exception.

Because Leftist propaganda is all part of the plaaaaaaaan. But put up a few right-wing posters, and EVERYBODY LOSES THEIR MINDS! But the great thing about the digital age: it's fair.

Steampunk Disney: The Game?

Super Punch brings us some exciting news this morning: there is apparently an interactive video game in the works involving the Disney franchise set to the tone of a steampunk universe. Look at this concept art, courtesy of Fred Gambino:

M&M Dye May Treat Spinal Injuries

I'm here for the massage.

Blue Food Dye Used in M&M's May Treat Spinal Cord Injuries

A common and safe blue food dye might provide the best treatment available so far for spinal cord injuries, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.

Tests in rats showed the dye, called brilliant blue G, a close relative of the common food dye Blue no. 1, crossed into the spinal fluid and helped block inflammation, Maiken Nedergaard of the University of Rochester Medical Center and colleagues reported.

"We have no effective treatment now for patients who have an acute spinal cord injury," Dr. Steven Goldman, who worked on the study, said in a statement.

"Our hope is that this work will lead to a practical, safe agent that can be given to patients shortly after injury, for the purpose of decreasing the secondary damage that we have to otherwise expect."

When nerve cells in the brain or spine are damaged, they often release a spurt of chemicals that causes nearby cells to die. No one is sure why, and stopping this process is key to preventing the damage that continues to build after a stroke or spinal cord injury.

One of the chemicals is ATP. Nedergaard's team looked for something that would interfere with this and found the blue dye, which they called BBG, would do this via the P2X7R receptor or doorway.

"We found that IV administration of the P2X7R inhibitor BBG significantly reduced the severity of spinal cord damage without any evident toxicity," they wrote.

Shooting Down the Raptor

Shooting Down The Raptor
By INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY
| Posted Tuesday, July 21, 2009 4:20 PM PT

Defense Spending: The TARP bailout may hit $24 trillion, but the Senate says the F-22 is too expensive to build and maintain. So why are the Japanese so desperate to buy this "unnecessary" Cold War weapon?

By a vote of 58-40, the Senate on Tuesday voted to remove $1.75 billion set aside in a defense bill to build seven more F-22 Raptors, adding to the 187 stealth technology fighters already in the pipeline.

After some hope the production lines would be kept open, the Senate succumbed to arguments by the administration and others that the fighter was too expensive, too hard to maintain and not built for the wars America is fighting these days.

President Obama welcomed the Senate vote, saying he rejected the notion that the country has to "waste billions of taxpayers dollars" on outdated defense projects.

Well, the inspector general in charge of overseeing the Treasury Department's bank-bailout program now says the massive endeavor could end up costing taxpayers almost $24 trillion in a worst-case scenario. Yet we can't afford to build just seven more F-22s?

Keeping the F-22 production lines open would be a real stimulus saving real jobs. Lockheed Martin, the main contractor, says 25,000 people are directly employed in building the plane, and another 70,000 have indirect links, particularly in Georgia, Texas and California. Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., a supporter of the program, says there are 1,000 suppliers in 44 states. That's wasteful?
